Selfless Honored Community Humanitarian & Volunteer

Ken Sundin was a highly successful teacher in the Northshore School District for 31 years and a well-respected volunteer in the greater community. He utilized his skills to augment his classroom curriculum, including integrating math into the sixth-grade science rocketry curriculum, designing a math and spelling baseball activity tied to the importance of success in math and spelling, developing a research project for social studies on indigenous peoples of South America, and combining science with geography's influence on Native American history. Additionally, he established a student patrol program at each school where he was assigned and helped plan and participate in a mentoring program for students with disabilities. For more than 25 years, he volunteered with the Northshore Ski School. Outside of the school district, Sundin was a respected volunteer in a variety of programs. He volunteered with the U.S. National Park Service and received the Volunteers-In-Parks certificate in recognition of his contributions. He supported a Port Angeles community food bank by picking up and delivering more than 20 tons of potatoes over a 25-year period. Sundin was a juror and an art docent at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival and Tacoma Waterway Maritime Festival. He was also involved in his church, training and scheduling greeters, providing meals and serving as head cook at youth camps. In the school district, Sundin's dedication to learning inspired thousands of students and his leadership skills enhanced district programs. Since retiring in 1998, he has carried on with his life of service bettering the lives of countless others in the community.
