Innovative Impactful Classroom Teacher & Volunteer

Instrumental Initiator of Districtwide Student Programs

Cliff Sundin impacted countless students during his 45 years of teaching at Crystal Springs and Fernwood elementary schools in the Northshore School District. He was a dedicated professional who truly enjoyed teaching while creating hands-on, multi-disciplinary units to support learning. Sundin integrated reading, math, science, social studies and art with students following Alaska's Iditarod Sled Dog Race. In recognition of his many schoolwide projects and events benefiting the school and students at Crystal Springs, he was awarded the PTA's Golden Acorn Award. Sundin was instrumental in helping organize the district's new fifth-grade outdoor education program on Whidbey Island called Camp Casey. He developed the forestry and survival units for the program. He attended and presented historical aspects of Fort Casey to students, something he continued for three years after his retirement in 2000. Sundin was the coach for the all-girls Eastside Track Club that provided the first participation opportunity for girls. This led him to start the district's cross country program at all Northshore elementary schools and become the program's districtwide leader. He also was a leader in the district's elementary track and field program. Additionally, he taught driver's education, including eight years after he retired; chaperoned for the Northshore Ski School; and worked on the school design committee for a new elementary school, which became Kokanee Elementary. Sundin exemplified the qualities desired of a teacher, positively affected the lifelong learning of those around him, and truly lived the character traits he taught, inspiring others to be their best.
