Respected Excellence in Teaching Award Recipient,
Local and Global Public-Spirited Humanitarian
Ron Lucas loved teaching and the Northshore community. In 1969, Lucas started his first year of teaching for the Northshore School District at the Anderson Building. He went from teaching at Anderson to teaching sixth grade at Woodin Elementary School when it opened in 1970. When Sunrise Elementary School opened, Lucas moved to Sunrise Elementary and finished his career at the school. Lucas was a wonderful teacher who cared for students, faculty and parents. While at Sunrise, he was awarded the Golden Apple award for his excellence in teaching. For several years Lucas served on the Northshore Education Association, NEA, board. After 30 years of teaching, Lucas retired in 1999 and immediately signed up to teach Drivers Education to students. He earned his CDL license so that he could drive school buses in order to keep in touch with students and staff. He also drove buses for sports games, camps and music department competitions and music festivals. Additionally, Lucas drove buses for his church's youth camps and rallies in Bothell, Canada, the Oregon coast and Montana, as well as driving the Choir Ministry to many singing engagements around the Northshore area. Proclaiming his faith, Lucas participated in global mission trips to Nicaragua, the Philippines, India and Spain. In 2020, he drove for a team in Spain that walked the El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Whether teaching, driving a bus or participating in global missions, Lucas demonstrated his commitment and connection to others.
