John B. Hughes, Volunteer 40 Yrs.
Influential Community Achiever & Volunteer,
Scholarship Foundation of Northshore Founder & Leader
John B. Hughes has been working to make the Northshore community a better place to live since coming to the area as a young man in the 1960s as an associate of the community newspaper and remaining to become publisher/editor of the Bothell Citizen, later named the Northshore Citizen. Hughes created a weekly feature recognizing students and school accomplishments. He has been active in many volunteer organizations, most notably the Woodinville Rotary and the Scholarship Foundation of Northshore. A past Rotary president, Hughes' efforts to help the community through Rotary activities include Operation Warm Coats. For over 15 years, 7,500 coats have been purchased and distributed to Northshore students. Hughes played an instrumental role in the creation of community parks, including converting DeYoung Park into Peace Pole Park, which is the center of Christmas lighting for the community. In 2022, the Woodinville Rotary proclaimed Hughes the Rotarian of the Century for his 35 years of setting the standard of service above self to the community and Rotary. In 1984, Hughes, along with other leaders, established the Scholarship Foundation of Northshore where he currently serves as Executive Director. Since its inception, over $4.3 million has been awarded to 2,270 NSD graduates, enabling them to pursue higher education. Hughes was one of the organizers of the 2011 National Alliance for Mental Illness, NAMI, annual walk to help support programs for people with mental illness and their families. Over 1,500 walkers participated in the walk that year. As an ardent advocate for the Northshore community for more than five decades, no one has devoted more time and effort to the community's progress.
