Eric Lucas brought his love and passion for music to his students and community throughout his career. Lucas began as the instrumental music teacher at Woodinville High in 2001 and became the Director of Instrumental Music and the Performing Arts Department Chair. He taught Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band and Rock Guitar. Lucas had a unique ability to connect with students, fostering a love for learning and encouraging them to reach their full potential. His instrumental groups were always in the top placements in local, regional and national competitions. The orchestra was featured at a Washington State Music Educators Association conference. Lucas donated his time as a leader of the Mills Music Marching Band for elementary and junior high students in the Bothell 4th of July parade. He served four terms as president of the Northlake Music Educators Association. Lucas received a 2004 National Society of High School Scholars Educator of Distinction Award, a 2006 Who's Who Among American High School Teachers recognition, and multiple Educator of Excellence awards. In 2018, Lucas was inducted into the Washington Music Educators Hall of Fame. Lucas had a profound impact on students, colleagues and the broader educational community. His visionary leadership and advocacy for educational equity and inclusion drove change and advanced the field of education. Lucas tragically passed away while on vacation in July 2017 from injuries he sustained rescuing four swimmers from a rip tide. His selflessness was evident in every aspect of his life and his unwavering commitment to service, family and education has positively impacted countless lives.
