Dave Monahan, BHS 1979
Impactful and Innovative Fire Service Legacy,
Devoted & Recognized Energetic Community Volunteer
Dave Monahan has profoundly impacted the Northshore community through his dedicated service to the Bothell Fire Department. In 1987, Monahan joined the Bothell Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and was hired in 1999 as a
career firefighter and EMT. In 2021, Monahan was promoted to assistant fire marshal, a position he held until retiring in 2023, where he reviewed new commercial and multifamily construction for compliance with national fire codes and helped educate citizens about fire safety. Monahan often served as a bicycle medic for Bothell events, such as the 4th of July parade. The bicycle team also got medical aid to locations inaccessible to emergency vehicles. During his career with the department, Monahan achieved many honors. In 2018, he was named Community Transit's 4th Quarter Smart Commuter, an incentive program to reduce drive-alone trips to work. He was chosen the fire department's Employee of the Year in 2019. For more than 30 years, Monahan tirelessly advocated for Bothell by volunteering at events; leading community workshops and classes; serving on union boards; and developing a software system, FireTrex, that became a regional program used for firefighter training and staffing services. The program is currently used by more than 35 different departments. An active volunteer in the community, Monahan worked with MADD to help educate the public about the dangers of driving drunk. He also volunteered in bicycle charity events. Monahan was selected as the Grand Marshal of the 2024 Bothell 4th of July parade. His contributions have earned him many honors, reflecting the deep gratitude of the community and region for his unwavering dedication.
