Alan “Speck” Strand, BHS 1963
Wall of Honor Co-Founder,
Community Champion Dedicated & Beloved High School Teacher,
Coach & Mentor
Alan “Speck” Strand was a dedicated and accomplished educator, coach, athletic director, community advocate and friend. At Bothell High Strand was a multi-sport athlete and student leader. In 1970, he joined the Bellevue High School faculty as a teacher and coach. His success as a leader, coach and mentor resulted in his selection as the school's athletic director. His primary consideration was always the student athletes. Strand received the Athletic Directors Service Award and the KingCo Conference Athletic Director of the Year Award. In 2000, he was inducted into the WSSAAA Athletic Director Hall of Fame. A priority of his was to give back to the Northshore community that supported him. In 2008, Strand and fellow Bothell football player, George Selg, spearheaded the campaign to purchase the new electronic scoreboard for Pop Keeney Stadium. Part of their intent was to use it to highlight students who didn't get the recognition football players received. Strand and his wife Nancy's contributions to Evergreen Health supported the cath lab, enabling it to provide state-of-the-art care. Wanting to ensure kids had plenty of places to play, he served as the Woodinville Parks and Recreation Commissioner for three years. In 2010, Strand co-founded the Northshore Wall of Honor. Currently, more than 133 Northshore alumni, staff and volunteers who made outstanding contributions to the community, state or world have been recognized on the wall. Strand understood the importance of relationships and would never look the other way when someone needed help, a hug or a compassionate ear. Strand passed away in January 2024. The Northshore community will forever be better because of Strand's community devotion.
